The Capital Region just made it through their first big snowstorm of the winter season, but we have a feeling it won’t be the last of the snow this season. In fact, we have a feeling that this is really just the beginning of the winter season. That means if you had trouble getting through the snow this time you better get your vehicle ready for whatever else might be thrown at us.
All service is important when it comes to keeping your vehicle running properly, but making sure you have tires that are fresh and have a thick tread, will be your lifesaver this winter. You might hear people talk about how their vehicle is great in the snow, but what it really comes down to is their tires. If you don’t have the proper tires on your vehicle or your tires are worn out and older you might find yourself slipping and sliding all over the place.
If you’re unsure what tire tread is, it is the deep lines that run throughout your tires. The thinker your tire’s tread is the better grip your tires will have, aka not as much slipping and sliding. A lot of people don’t realize that their tires need to be changed because they’re worn out. If you’re not sure when is the right time to change your tires I have a very simple test that will tell you just that. The penny test will only take a few seconds and save you the hassle of having to bring it into the shop to check. For more information about the penny test, check it out below!
The Penny Test
- The idea of the penny test is to check whether you’ve hit the 2/32” threshold
- Place a penny between the tread ribs on your tire.
- Turn the penny so that Lincoln’s head points down into the tread.
- See if the top of his head disappears between the ribs. If it does, your tread is still above 2/32”
- If you can see his entire head, it may be time to replace the tire because your tread is no longer deep enough.
Helpful Numbers To Remember:
4/32” or deeper = Good depth
3/32” = Replace tires soon
2/32” or less = Replace tires now

Is it time to renew your license? I know, I know that means you have to go to the dreaded DMV. but it is important that you don’t put it on the back burner. If you think about it we use our license for a lot…When we’re driving, proving our age, traveling, identification, and so on so making sure your driver’s license is up to date is important. In fact, you must renew your license before it expires or you could face fines. You can renew up to 1 year before it expires and 2 years after (there are no exceptions). Once renewed, your license expiration date will be extended for 8 years. Are thinking I’ve never had to renew my license so I have no idea how to do so? Well, lucky for you I have step-by-step directions to ensure you excel at renewing your license.
** It is now recommended when renewing your license, that you upgrade to an enhanced license or REAL ID to avoid having to go back to the DVM because Starting in October 2020, you will need an Enhanced or REAL ID to board a domestic flight (unless you have a passport).
There is a couple of ways to renew your ID, you can go to the DMV, do it online, or mail it in. It is completely dependent upon the person renewing, but I will tell you how to do each.
Renewing at the DMV:
- Complete the renewal notice that was mailed to you, if you did not receive one you can print one out on your state’s DMV website
- Come into the DMV, bring your current Standard license, your renewal notice or application, and your payment
- You must renew at a DMV office if you
- Have a commercial driver license (CDL)
- Want to update your photo
Renewing Online
- If you already have an Enhanced or REAL ID, or you want to keep your Standard, you can renew online. Your document type will stay the same.
- First, you’ll have to pass an eye test by an approved provider
- Second, you’ll keep the same document type you currently have (Standard, REAL ID or Enhanced).
- Pay using a credit card or debit card
- Third download and print the temporary license PDF. Your License will arrive in the mail within 10 days
Renewing By Mail
- Complete a vision test, or get tested by a professional
- Make check or money order payable to your local motor vehicle
- Mail to the local DMV
Let’s be honest, driving can be a stressful task, you are literally in control on an object that weighs tons of pounds…literally! Most of the time you’re not doing a cool 25 miles hour down the road, there is a much greater chance that you are going anywhere from 40-65 miles an hour and in a split second something could happen and you could lose control. And don’t even get me started on the driving skills of the other people on the road, right? So it’s normal to have a little road rage pent up inside of you, right? WRONG! Defensive driving actually causes more accidents which is bad enough because people can get seriously hurt, but it also cost a lot of money to fix your car.
So, do you want to get from point A to Point B a little happier than you usually do? If so, keep reading I have so great tips to help you stay calm behind the wheel!
Be Prepared:
- A good day of drive starts the night before. You don’t want to be drowsy and driving, it’s unsafe. Plus, I’m pretty cranky when I’m tired and I bet you are too. So get a good night sleep!
Slow down:
- After drunk driving, speeding is the leading cause of car accidents. Plan ahead, give yourself buffer time in the case you hit traffic.
Tune into calm sounds:
- Research has shown that listening to some types of music or conversational sounds help reduce stress. So replace your favorite album for some more peaceful sounds to keep you calm on your drive!
LIve and let live;
- You are the ruler of your own tranquility. However, you do not own the road. Do not hang out in the fastest lane or block people from passing because you feel your mission is to go the speed limit—and ensure everyone else does. Slowing down traffic is not only impolite, it also leads to accidents as other drivers weave to get around you.
I know it isn’t always easy to stay calm, hey we all let the stress of life get to us, but if we can find a way to remain calm when behind the wheel we can all have a safer drive from point A to point B. If you find that these tips aren’t helping you may want to do more research on how to de-stress.
Summer’s here and what better time is there to clean out and organize your garage? There’s no better time, that’s the answer. You’re going to want to park your car out of the sun – i.e. in the garage. You also need to know where your summer stuff is, like beach chairs and umbrellas. Wouldn’t it be great to organize your garage? You see where I am going with this. Anyway, check out our guide to organizing that garage and then get started! What are you waiting for?
The first step to this process is to completely empty your garage, and get everything outside into the driveway or onto your lawn. This includes junk, your car, other things you own… you get the idea. Then you should start to sort everything you’ve just taken out into two piles, one for things that you want to keep and one for things that you’ve been meaning to throw away or just forgot about. Throw those things away right now. Dispose of chemicals like paint safely, but just get it out of there forever.
With your garage empty, you should sweep and vacuum the floor and dust the corners. If it’s a nice day, you could even hose down the floor! If you’re feeling super adventurous, consider applying an epoxy garage floor kit. It’s a lot of work and a lot of waiting, but it’s worth it if you’re looking for a really serious makeover.
With the space clean, it’s time to take a critical look at your current storage solutions. If you don’t have shelves or wall storage, consider getting some! It’s a great space-saving hack to store things vertically. You can even store bikes on wall racks, which saves a TON of space.
Finally, get everything back into your garage, organizing as you go. You’ll probably spot some things that you thought you wanted to keep but are really junk that you can just go ahead and throw away. You don’t need that in your life. When everything’s back in place (or has found a new home), park your car back inside!
One important skill that we believe everyone should have in life is the ability to change your car’s battery. No matter how well your car is running, your battery could be nearing the end of its lifespan. Do you remember the last time you changed your car’s battery? If not, then you should definitely take a peek under the hood at your battery, or give us a call to have it tested so you know just how much juice is in that brick!
Something that you should know about your car’s battery is that the power that’s housed inside of it is an absolutely finite resource. One day, your battery will die. Of course, if you take good care of it and drive carefully, that day should be several years after you buy the battery, but eventually, it will perish and you’ll be powerless (get it) to stop it. That’s why you should know now how to change your battery so that in the event that you need to do so, you can.
First of all, the location of your battery is going to be in your owner’s manual. If you drive anything other than a regular old gasoline vehicle (i.e. a hybrid) you should 100% be checking your owner’s manual for instructions on how to change the battery.
When you’ve located the battery, make sure you know which post is the positive one and which is the negative, and which color the cables are that are attached to them. The positive post will probably have a red plastic cover, a red cable, and a plus sign (+) stamped on the battery next to the positive post. If the cables are not color coded, put some tape on them and label the cables.
With a wrench, loosen the nut or bolt that keeps the negative terminal and cable attached to the battery. Remove them from the battery, and then move on to the positive terminal. ALWAYS DO NEGATIVE FIRST!
Check your battery to see if it is being held down by clamps or tie-downs or similar and remove them if they are there. Set all of your loose parts aside where they will not be misplaced while you switch out the battery.
Now, lift out the battery without jostling it or tipping it. It is heavy, so be careful!
Next, it’s time to install the new battery! Place it in the same spot the old battery was in and make sure it is oriented the same exact way the old one was. Take the plastic caps off of the battery posts, and if there are anti-corrosion washers included then slide those on. A good idea is to smear a thin layer of Vaseline onto the posts before attaching the terminals to the battery to prevent corrosion and make sure your vehicle is always getting as much power as it needs.
Attach the terminals back on, positive first, and fasten it back down with the clamps/tie-downs that you removed before.
Give the battery a little wiggle and make sure it doesn’t move. If it does, tighten the clamps holding it down. And… you’re done! Great job! Make sure you recycle your old battery – a quick Google search will let you know the best place to do that.
Driving in the spring can be a dangerous venture, especially when it’s raining out and the roads get slick. Sure, we’ve all muscled our way through winter driving before, but there’s nothing quite like heavy spring rain making everything more slippery and dangerous! When the rain is coming down, those few minutes right at the beginning of the storm are the most dangerous and that’s when you’re at the highest risk of hydroplaning. Learn how to avoid hydroplaning and what to do if you find yourself losing traction.
First of all, don’t panic! When you panic, you’re a lot more likely to slam on either the brakes or the gas pedal, and neither will help you out in this situation. Hydroplaning is when your front tires lose traction, and while braking slows down your front tires, it locks the rear tires and causes you to spin out. Because hydroplaning can make your vehicle spin a little anyway, accelerating when you’re losing traction makes you lose control of the direction your vehicle is going to go in. If you find this happening, look for an open spot in front of you on the road and try to gently steer your vehicle in that direction. Just like when you’re sliding on ice, don’t oversteer! Guide your vehicle in the direction you want to go without putting your foot on either the brake or the gas.
Avoiding hydroplaning is easy. Don’t use your cruise control in a rainstorm, because the water on the road and the loss of traction can trick your vehicle into thinking it needs to supply more power to the wheels. This means your vehicle will try to accelerate suddenly and, well, that’s a recipe for trouble. Some preventive measures you can take to avoid hydroplaning are to make sure that your tires are in good shape and have plenty of tread. Do the penny test to make sure your tires are in great shape – the deeper your tread, the more traction you’ll have in the rain. You should also go slower than you normally would – about a third of your normal speed is about right.
Take care and good luck. Even though it’s technically only water falling out of the sky, rain is still dangerous in its own way!
