Is it time to renew your license? I know, I know that means you have to go to the dreaded DMV. but it is important that you don’t put it on the back burner. If you think about it we use our license for a lot…When we’re driving, proving our age, traveling, identification, and so on so making sure your driver’s license is up to date is important. In fact, you must renew your license before it expires or you could face fines. You can renew up to 1 year before it expires and 2 years after (there are no exceptions). Once renewed, your license expiration date will be extended for 8 years.  Are thinking I’ve never had to renew my license so I have no idea how to do so? Well, lucky for you I have step-by-step directions to ensure you excel at renewing your license.

** It is now recommended when renewing your license, that you upgrade to an enhanced license or REAL ID to avoid having to go back to the DVM because Starting in October 2020, you will need an Enhanced or REAL ID to board a domestic flight (unless you have a passport).

There is a couple of ways to renew your ID, you can go to the DMV, do it online, or mail it in. It is completely dependent upon the person renewing, but I will tell you how to do each.

Renewing at the DMV:

  • Complete the renewal notice that was mailed to you, if you did not receive one you can print one out on your state’s DMV website
  • Come into the DMV,  bring your current Standard license, your renewal notice or application, and your payment

  • You must renew at a DMV office if you
  • Have a commercial driver license (CDL)
  • Want to update your photo

Renewing Online

  • If you already have an Enhanced or REAL ID, or you want to keep your Standard, you can renew online. Your document type will stay the same.
  • First, you’ll have to pass an eye test by an approved provider
  • Second, you’ll keep the same document type you currently have (Standard, REAL ID or Enhanced).
  • Pay using a credit card or debit card
  • Third download and print the temporary license PDF. Your License will arrive in the mail within 10 days

Renewing By Mail

  • Complete a vision test, or get tested by a professional
  • Make check or money order payable to your local motor vehicle
  • Mail to the local DMV
